Coloured Valley & Jaizkibel

Jaizkibel is a mountain range of the Basque Country located east of Pasaia, north of Lezo and west of Hondarribia, in Spain, with 547 m (1,795 ft) at the highest point. The range stretches south-west to north-east, where it plunges into the sea at the Cape Higuer. To the north-west, the mountain dips its slopes in the sea with beautiful cliffs all along, overlooking on the east the marshes of Txingudi.

Itinerary 1: Coulored Valley

Description:

If your passion is geology, if you like when the Nature mixes rocks, sea and mountains, if your hobby is the photography, this is your tour. I would like to guide you in one of the most amazing scenarios that mother earth has created in the Basque country, The coast of Jaizkibel.

 

 There are a few mysteries that this coast hides with a great added value worth to be discovered:

- The paramoudras at the fossils beach are the best  prehistorical fossilised underwater  warm pipes conserved in the world.

- The white labyrinth, hides the Gruyere cheese and the shell, a couple of sandstone geological forms with no rival in the whole coast due to its special design.

- The coloured valley is an amazing geological formation where the sandstone have taken red, yellow, ochre and other different colours that depending on the light of the day look from another world.

 

What should I bring?

Wearing: mountain boots or trekking shoes / sportive cloths / Gore-Tex or rain jacket in case of rain or wind / pullover / winter jacket in case of cold / one or two sticks to walk.

Eating: we will do a break in order to have some snack. Each person will carry its own food. As suggestions you could bring: a sandwich, nuts, fruit, energetic bars, etc, 

Drinking: minimum a litre of water

Itinerary 2: Jaizkibel

Level: medium

Elevation: 2000 feet (600 m) 

Duration: 6 hours walk

Distance: 10 milles (15 km)

Starting Time: 8h30 (8:30am)

Arrival Time: 15h30 (3:30pm)

Description:

This is not a circular trekking though a lineal one. We will start taking the bus to Hondarribia in San Sebastian (3 €), this will give us the chance to know one of the most beautiful towns of Spain. From here, we will climb all the way to Guadalupe fortress and little by little we will achieve the top of Jaizkibel (543 m/1780 feet).

On the going down we will take te coastal way that goes over the cliffs above Pasaia, an spectacular hike that will finish in another hidden gem, the little town of Pasaia about which Victor Hugo said that it was a little flaring eden...famous if it would be located in Italy.

This is a fantastic opportunity to visit Hondarribia and Pasaia, 2 of the most famous coastal towns in the Basque Country, admire the stunning views that we can get all the way from the Jaizkibel ridge, understand about the militar history that had this mountain as it was used as an observatory and a defensive point.

From Pasaia to go back to San Sebastian we will take the boat (0.80€) and the bus (2.5 €)
